Diwali has just arrived.. Sweets are sold in large quantities on any street. Many organizations gift sweet boxes to their employees. However, in such cases, news of adulteration in sweets is also frequent.
In recent times, adulterated milk and adulterated ghee have been caught on a large scale.
Experts say that there is a risk of adding artificial ingredients and chemicals in some sweets to meet the demand.
Eating such adulterated foods is definitely not good for health.
The Food Safety and Standards Institute of India (FSSAI), a government of India, has suggested methods to find out if these food items are adulterated at home or not.
FSSAI seizes tonnes of adulterated khoya across the country during Diwali every year.
Khoya (cova) is a substance made of milk. It is mostly used in the preparation of sweets. The milk is boiled well and khoya is made.
Khoya is usually white or pale yellow in colour. It’s a little sweet.
It is used in the preparation of most traditional sweets.
Most of the khoya is adulterated by mixing porridge, ghee, blotting paper and chalk powder.
There are many ways to identify that khoya is adulterated.
That’s what they are..
Take a spoonful full of khoya and mix it in hot water. Add some iodine to it.
Then if the khoya turns blue, it means that there is porridge in it.
If it does not turn blue, the material may be considered pure.
Take some khoya in a small bowl. Add sulphuric acid to it. If it turns purple, it means it has been adulterated.
It can also be detected when buying a khoya.
If you touch a pure khoya, it is a bit rough. It’s sweet to taste. If you rub it on the hand, greasy grease is formed.
Before buying it, take some amount and rub it in the palm of your hand. If all this exists it can be considered pure.
Add two teaspoons of hydrochloric acid and one teaspoon of sugar to the sample to find out if it is adulterated with vegetable oil.
After doing so, if the mixture turns red, it means that the khoya is not pure.
By applying a silver coating on the sweets, the sweet looks attractive. Sales will increase greatly.
However, with the rise in silver prices, it is also getting adulterated. Experts say aluminium is being added to it.
Take a little layer of silver on the sweet and rub it with two fingers.
If it is pure, it will turn into powder. Adulterated with aluminium breaks into smaller pieces.
There are frequent reports of adulteration of milk and dairy products in the country.
According to the FSSAI, artificial milk contains hazardous chemicals such as urea, detergent, soap, boric acid, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate.
Eating substances mixed with such chemicals can lead to a variety of health issues.
The FSSAI has suggested a variety of methods to check adulterated milk and milk products.
Pour a few drops of milk over a plate. Bend the plate slightly to one side.
If the milk is not adulterated, they will slowly go towards the bending side of the plate. When that is done, a layer of white is left near the milking.
If the milk is adulterated with water, the plate will quickly move towards the bending side. The white layer is also not visible.
Take 5 to 10 ml of milk as a sample. The same amount of water should also be taken.
All these two should be mixed well.
If milk contains detergent, a thick foam is formed on the milk.
But if a thin layer of foam is formed when stirred, the milk can be considered pure.
